CONSERVATIONIST OF THE YEAR AWARDED TO MEAD CATTLE ENTERPRISES
Mead Cattle Enterprises was the proud recipients of the 2009 Conservationist of the Year award from the Brier Creek Soil and Water Conservation District. The Brier Creek SWCD, which includes Burke, Glascock, Jefferson, Jenkins and Richmond counties, hosted an annual awards banquet to recognize Tommy for his outstanding contributions to soil and water conservation. In an effort to protect natural resources, the district encourages landowners to use conservation tillage as a cropping system, install terraces and grassed waterways to reduce soil erosion, and plant grass or trees on highly erosional land to help protect streams. Burke County conservation district supervisors Charles McGregor III and Wayne Syms, along with Cread Brown of the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, agree that Mead was an excellent choice for this year's award.
